AnimeFLV is a free guide to Japanese short films and art animation, with a hand-picked catalogue of 199 films from 1917 to today and a Watch now button that leads to official services.

Yes. Browsing, searching and My List are free, and Watch now shows free services with adverts as well as subscriptions, rentals and purchases.

Where do the films stream?

Watch now uses JustWatch to list the official services in your country, from art-house platforms to the large streaming services, and the national film archive of Japan shares many early films online.

Which film should I watch first?

Start with La Maison en Petits Cubes, Mon Mon the Water Spider or The Spider and the Tulip, all short and all wonderful.

Are the films in Japanese?

Films with dialogue are in Japanese, often with subtitles on the official services. Many early films are silent and many art films use images and music alone.

Can I search with Japanese titles?

Yes. Search accepts English titles and Japanese titles in Latin letters, so Namakura Gatana and The Dull Sword both work.

How does My List work?

Press Add to My List on any film page. The list stays in your browser and can be exported to another device.

Which films suit young children?

The Pikachu shorts, the Sanrio films, Koro's Big Day Out and the Norman the Snowman films are gentle favourites.

Does AnimeFLV work on a phone or TV?

AnimeFLV works in any current browser. On a television, press Watch now and open the chosen service's own app.

How often is the catalogue updated?

Restored classics and new festival shorts join the shelves regularly, and sorting the Directory by year shows the newest films first.
